Here is a list of semen available for purchase from Vastrap Boran as at May 2018. Please note, where indicated semen is only available for Export. We do not sell sexed semen.

Factors to consider when using semen to artificially inseminate (AI) cows:
1. You need a semen canister filled with liquid nitrogen to store and transport semen in. Semen must stay frozen at all times otherwise it dies!!! The size of the flask determines how expensive it is and how long you can store semen before the flask runs dry. The flask must be topped up or refilled with liquid nitrogen before it runs dry otherwise the semen will thaw and die. We recommend a flask that can hold about 3-month’s supply of liquid nitrogen (GP-20) and this size of flask costs about R15’000. Ideally the flask should be checked once a week and filled once a month. If you live somewhere that is not near a supply of liquid nitrogen then you will need a bigger flask – there are flask that last up to 12 months.
2. If you are not trained to do AI yourself, then you need to make sure that there is a vet or someone trained to do AI in your district that can help you. A vet is the most obvious choice, but they are also expensive. You can try someone at a dairy since they do a lot of AI. AI is not that difficult and there are several places where one can do a course and buy the necessary equipment to enable you to do AI yourself, but obviously it will take practice before you have good success rates.
3. If you are okay with all of the above then you can buy semen. One uses semen rather than a bull because semen from the very best bulls are cheaper than buying the whole bull. Also AI enables you get get new genetics into your herd for diversity without having to own several bulls. However, a bull is much more effective and much less work than AI. AI is used to complement your bull and never to take the place of a bull. In many instances it is more cost effective to buy a bull to cover your cows rather than to use semen in an AI programme.

I AM IN NAMIBIA AND IS INTERESTED IN BORAN BULLS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 TO 24 MONTHS OR SEMEN. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME??
Hi Zeanthye. I only sell 3 year old bulls. They have all been through a 6 months veldt performance test, been inspected by the Boran Society, been graded by a panel of 4 established Boran breeders and have a vetinary certificate for fertility and free of any diseases. I have two groups that sell for R35’000 and R25’000 respectively. Semen has to be transported in a nitrogen flask and pass all the Namibia import protocols. You will need a flask which you need to deliver to an exporting intermediary. They will charge a fee for clearing the semen and courier your flask with the semen to you. Let me know what you would like to do. I have one of the best bulls in the country. His name is Chico MHB 03-06. I sell his semen for R250 per straw.
Very nice bulls
good day , i am interested in buying Boran semen in Queenstown area, can you please give me contacts in that area
Hi Banele, you can contact Stephen Johnson from Frontier Boran near Fort Beaufort. edendale@vodamail.co.za
Good Afternoon.
How does your semen procedure work?
I’m in Eastern Cape, do you have any branch around Ngcobo, Eastern Cape near Umtata?
Hi Dlabane,
Thank you very much for your enquiry about semen. Most of our semen straws are kept here on our farm in the Eastern Free State near Ladybrand. Some of our quarantine tapped semen is kept at Embryo Plus in Brits.
The only way to get it is if you come and collect with a liquid nitrogen flask to keep the straws frozen.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.
Hi I would like to knw more about semen procedure , I have brahman heifers
Hi Oscar,
Thank you for your enquiry. Which country are you based? If it’s not South Africa, then the first thing to know is that we can only export semen to other African countries. At present there are no export protocols with countries outside of Africa.
The second thing is that the transport of semen straws requires you to have a liquid nitrogen flask to keep the semen frozen at all times.
Then finally, you need a vet or someone qualified to be able to do artificial insemination on your cows when you use the semen.
Please let us know if you have more specific questions we can help with.
Regards,
Quentin

Hello, I would like to procedure Boran Semen and I live in Mthatha in the Eastern. Could you please refer me to the place near where I can go and buy. Thank you.
There is a top breeder in East London. Peinke Ranch Boran. Please get hold of him. Otherwise I have semen for sale, but I am near Bloemfontein in the Free State.
Is it advisable to use Boran Semen on Brahman heifers (20-24 months) for their first calves?
The Borman is a beautiful cross. I would not necessarily say only for their first cross, but more as a well structured cross-breeding project. Keep to good quality bulls from each breed – poor bulls of every breed are your enemy.
Hi,
what is the price range for semen straws
Like the price of live animals varies from R15’000 to R500’000, so there is a big variance with the value of semen from about R100 per straw to R4000 per straw.
Hi I’m in Pretoria where can I buy semen
Hi. I have lots of semen. You can buy from me and either collect from me or I have a place that I can deliver in Brits.
If you want AI approved bulls tapped in quarantine, the price is R250 per straw. If you are okay with farm tapped semen, then the price is R150 per straw.

Jaco Bothma
Hi Jaco
Groete,
Marisa
Hi i am in Zambia ,and i will like to find out about the semen for rebel, brav, impi, chilo, khan, and can u explain to the mode of transportation if u can arrange the export for if made the payment, i do not understand what do u mean by saying par/ straw coz im new in this business is per semen or please send me also ur cotact number hope to hear from u soon
Hi Allan. To export semen to Zambia one needs to have the bull placed in quarantine. The bull is tested for all sorts of diseases and once the results are clean then he is tapped for semen under quarantine which is suitable for export.
The semen is stored in a straw hence “a straw of semen”. I have several bulls that have been tapped for export including Zambia. They are Khan, Rustin, Impi, Chico and Goliat. The straws are R250 each.
There are extra admin fees and courier fees and you need to either deliver a nitrogen flask or buy one (R20’000) for the semen to travel from SA to Zambia.
All my other bulls do not qualify for export.

Quwntin
Can you send me a price of what it would cost to send a 100 straws of semen to New Zealand please I would like to know in Nz $$$
Hi John
Please could you find out from your department of agriculture if there is a export protocol between NZ and SA. I don’t think NZ accepts semen from SA.
I will try to find out from my side, but I think it will be easier from yours.
Regards
Quentin.
Are you exporting to USA?
Hi Richard.
At this stage there is no way of getting genetics from South Africa to the US.
We, here, can import semen and embryos from the US but not the other way around. Unfortunately.
If ar buy semen for Boran bull you can courier it to Botswana?
Yes, we can do it but please read out website article under semen for sale http://www.vastrapboran.com
Hi Marisa
Im impressed with your bulls, i need to buy some semen for use in Zimbabwe. Can you please give some guidelines on the process, equipment and costs involved.

Thanks a lot for this helpful and detailed explanation.
Pleasure, wrote it down because we were having to answer so many questions about AI.
Hie, do you sell sexed semen, if not, where can you refer me to especially for the Borans.
Hi Nelson, unfortunately none of our semen is sexed.
Hi I’m Victor I wanted to buy bull semen please advise me how to buy and the place I’m in Johannesburg North
Hi Victor, most of the semen we have for sale is kept at Embryo Plus in Brits, which is not too far from you. Please send us an email at vastrapboran@gmail.com if you would like more information. You would need a flask with liquid nitrogen to transport the semen safely to where it is needed.
Hi Marisa
Any young bulls for sale?
Hi Gilbert, we don’t currently have any Boran bulls for sale off the farm. Our next crop of 3-year old bulls will be on offer at our auction on 21 August 2020.
