Khan MHB 04-27 (KPO 786 x ADC 5761)

Khan MHB 04-27 (KPO 786 x ADC 5761) is one of the top Boran stud bulls in South Africa. He derives his name from his damline which is KELLY. The Granddam of the Kelly bloodline is ADC 5761 which is exclusive to Mollshoop Boran. These genetics have become extremely rare since the demise of Kenya’s state-run Mutara herd in the 2010 drought.

Khan is probably the most well-known of the KPO 786 sons in South Africa. His DAM (Kelly ADC 5761) was exclusive to Mollshoop and only four animals were born to this dam in South Africa – all to Mollshoop. Khan is the bull that has made the greatest impact on the Vastrap Boran herd in terms of sheer numbers and quality of his offspring. He was used as the primary sire from 2006 until he was sold to Burnie Staal and Paul Pienaar in 2013. Khan is a bull with “X-factor” – incredible length of body, depth, muscling and most importantly, he breeds quality. A year after Burnie Staal bought him, he confided that the purchase of Khan made him feel like he had bought 50% of the Vastrap herd.

Khan has exceptional muscling, length, depth and hardiness. His rib-eye muscling and width across his forearms (both an indication of the amount of meat on his carcass) are unparalleled. In addition, his full sister (same parents and same embryo flush), Kelly MHB 04-24 is the beacon of femininity. This bloodline has the rare quality amongst the Boran of breeding both great sires and dams.

The Jackie-Khan combination creates the foundation on which the Vastrap herd is built. Not only does this combination yield eye catching and beautiful progeny, these offspring have also themselves gone on to breed fantastically well with a range of different bulls (Rustin, Griffen, Goliat & Ollie). (see “Jackie-Khan: the foundation of the Vastrap herd“)

Khan has a sizeable sheath, which must be taken into account in breeding selecting, but in every other department he ranks in the top 1% in the breed. Khan’s genetics provide a golden opportunity to improve a herd’s muscling and beef factor. Not surprisingly, the Khan sons that we have used in our crossbreeding programme with Angus cows have yielded exceptionally good offspring, amongst them top performers in a recent feedlot trial with Sparta Beef (see “Crossbred Boran Feedlot Trial with Sparta” and “The Commercial Future of Boran cattle: Crossbreeding“).
